Through the 900 MW Arun-3 Hydroelectric Project located in Sankhuwasabha district in Province No. 1 of Nepal, the Government of Nepal (GoN) had decided to harness the hydropower potential in Arun River, considering the necessity of hydropower projects for development of the nation. Hence, GoN entered in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN – Government of India) Limited for the development of Arun-3. The project area lies in parts of former Pathibhara, Pawakhola, Makalu, Num, Yaphu, and Diding VDCs of Sankhuwasabha district. In the new federal structure, the project area includes Ward no. 3 of Chichila, Ward no. 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 of Makalu Rural Municipalities of Province 1. The PDA signed between the Government of Nepal and India, forms the basis for preparation and implementation of Local Benefit Sharing Plan (LBSP). The LBSP will include activities that aim to improve the standard of living of the communities in the Arun-3 project area through livelihood enhancements and support to physical infrastructure. Progress Inc. team conducted this pioneering assignment with KFA Consulting.
